PRESCOTT HILL CLIMB REPORT 24/25 APRIL

Three drivers dominated proceedings at Prescott Hill Climb over the weekend as competitors in the MCL British Hill Climb Championship made the first of two visits to the challenging hill this year.

Luckily, the rain, which was forecast, did not materialise and drivers had sunny but cool conditions throughout Sunday’s competitive runs.  In qualifying for round 3 of the championship, reigning champion Scott Moran from Ludlow driving a Gould GR 61X was beaten by former champion Martin Groves from Wendlebury in his Gould GR55B by 0.24 secs.  Aylesbury’s Trevor Willis was third in his OMS CF06.  Stroud’s Chris Merrick in his Gould GR55 qualified fourth benefiting from a new aerodynamic package and paddle shift gear change fitted over the winter.

In the run off for championship points, Groves maintained his advantage over Moran to take maximum points in a time of 37.14 secs; 0.31 secs clear of his rival.  Willis was 3rd in 38.28 with Merrick a strong 4th in 38.63.

Special mention should be made of Will Hall (Halesowen) and Eynon Price (Llandeilo) in their Force PC’s and Stephen Owen (York) in his self built OMS, who all qualified for the run off despite the fact that they are only powered by 1600cc engines whereas all the other qualifiers had engines at least of 2500cc.  Price and Owen were rewarded with  9th and 10th places respectively.

In qualifying for round 4, Moran got the better of Groves by 0.49secs to qualify fastest with Willis 3rd and Merrick 4th.  In the run off, Merrick slowed slightly following a big slide at Orchard Corner to record 39.71 and 4th place.  Willis recorded 37.65 and 3rd place and Groves set a target of 37.02 for Moran to beat on his last run.  A missed gear change cost Moran dearly as he recorded 37.50 leaving the top four as per the morning runs.  Owen again excelled to qualify for the run off, sadly missing out on a point by 0.35 secs.  His efforts were rewarded by him being nominated Man of the Meeting.

Groves now heads the championship on 40 points, Moran is second on 38 points, Herefords Deryk Young is 3rd on 24 after recording 7th and 6th place finishes and Merrick 4th on 23.

Groves was very pleased with his weekend.  After a disastrous start to his 2008 campaign, 3 wins and a 2nd place from four rounds is a strong start to his season.  Moran was disappointed with two 2nd places, hoping for a double win.   Moran and Groves had a titanic battle throughout the 2008 season sharing most of the podiums, 2009 looks to be more of the same with these two being the main contenders for top honours throughout the season.  Chris Merrick was very happy with his two 4th place finishes and is looking forward to getting used to the developments on his car and improving throughout the season.

The championship now heads for two meetings over the weekend on 9/10th May at Barbon Manor in Cumbria and Harewood House in Yorkshire.

Richard Jones from Pitchcombe driving his Brabham BT29X won the Classic Racing and Sports Car class and Garry Cox from Gloucester driving his Reliant Scimitar took 3rd place in the Classic Sports Car class.

The next meeting at Prescott is on May 23/24.

We are looking at non-petrol engines this year and we know that we have at least one rare steam car here over the weekend, there may be more. We may also have a bit of non-petrol coup...but that is under wraps for now, so watch this space.
