Poitou Charentes - was nominated by Lonely Planet travel writers and authors at the end of2011 as one of the top ten regions of the world to visit in 2012. Poitou-Charentes is situated on the Atlantic Coast between Nantes and Bordeaux, Poitou-Charentes is particularly well known thanks to certain destinations such as La Rochelle and Cognac Country.  Five cities and six territories have the label ‘country of art and history’ within the region including Cognac, as Poitou-Charentes has a rich cultural heritage as well as being known for the wealth of activities there are on offer from walking and hiking to sailing and cycling.  The beautiful coastline is a favourite family holiday destination but the countryside is also lovely to visit – such as along the Charente Valley. For more details, visit: Poitou-Charentes. www.holidays-france-atlantic.com

Angoulême  -Located on the banks of the Charente River, Angoulême has long been associated with paper. Becoming the capital of paper in the Middle Ages, nowadays it is renowned as the capital of the image and more particularly, of the comic strip, with its annual festival and new museum. In Angoulême city centre, it is also fun to follow the cartoon trail throughout the town, as there are works of comic strip art on every street corner with over twenty painted walls to admire! Famous cartoonists such as Yslaire, Zep and Moebius are featured. They place the comic strip and the image in the heart of the city.

Circuit des Remparts – 14th- 16th September 2012. Seven decades after the creation of the Ramparts Grand Speedway Racing, the heart of Angouleme will, once again, be thrilled by the roaring of the racing cars which are going to invade the city during the third weekend of September. This unique show will rally more than 300 genuine representatives of the automobile heritage, together with various personalities of the industry. The Concours d’élégance opens the celebrations under floodlights on the Friday on Champ de Mars square. Many prizes will be awarded to different classes of vehicle: Torpedo, Berline, Coupe & Cabriolet. Cars on show: Lorraine Dietrich, Delage, de Dion Bouton, Bugatti…The weekend culminates with the parades and races on the ramparts on Sunday. www.circuit-des-remparts.com

Cognac - The capital of brandy production has great historical significance. The Château des Valois, for example, birthplace of King François I, delights history …and cognac enthusiasts. It is now the property of Maison Otard. The “liquor of gods”, as Victor Hugo called it, cognac owes its character to the warm, humid climate in this part of Western France. Otard, Camus, Hennessy, Martell, Rémy- Martin and Courvoisier can be found here and all offer guided tours of their cellars and vineyards. The vineyards of Cognac constitute the 2nd largest area of production in France after Bordeaux and cover an area of 80,000 hectares.
