Two full days of high-speed motor sport action brought the Prescott speed hill climbing season to a close at the weekend. The format was basically the same on both Saturday and Sunday with members of the Bugatti Owners’ Club and visiting Clubs and Championships making the most of the chance to compete on the 1127-yard hill for the last time in 2008.

Several car clubs had accepted the invitation to take part and included this Prescott weekend in their season-long Club championship series. One such was Gloucestershire’s other major one-make car club, the Moreton-in-Marsh based Porsche Club GB. Their Speed Championship began at Croft in north Yorkshire back on March 4th and there were 27 Porsches entered at Prescott in this, the final round.

Other Clubs featured included the MG Car Club, the Triumph TR Register, the 500 Owners Association the Reliant Scimitar and Sabre Club and Morgan Sports Car Club. The TVR Car Club made a special effort to get as many as possible of their members to Prescott on Sunday to see the TVRs in action. Some fifty of these shining sports cars lined up in the orchard car park and many joined a cavalcade up the hill at lunchtime. If you are interested in any of the series organised by the above Clubs, please have a look at their websites for full details and Championship tables.

The Toyo Tires Midland Speed Championship is proving very popular and there are rounds at venues across the wide Midlands. There were two classes for them on Sunday, both well-supported. The event also featured the motor cycles from the National Hill Climb Association and was a round in their series for Vintage machines.

This was a chance for the Bugatti Owners Club to invite members of other clubs to take part in general handicap classes of which there were four on Saturday and two on Sunday. Add to that the a selection of Bugatti cars,  visitors from the Vintage Sports Car Club and the Aston Martin Owners’ Club and it shows what a comprehensive programme the two days provided.

Fastest in Saturday’s bright sunshine was long-time Prescott campaigner Andy McBeath (Stoke Poges) in his lightweight OMS-Hornet with Suzuki power. He finished just ahead of.Pembrokeshire farmer and Prescott veteran Bill Morris, as fast as ever in his 2-litre Vauxhall. Third overall went to Cheltenham’s Terry Davis in his modified Reynard circuit racer with his own TKD V6 power unit installed, while his wife Tricia who brought the car home in fourth place - good going in a very competitive class.

Sunday’s competition saw the top two places overall taken by Ash Mason and Steven Day who shared the driving of their quick Pilbeam-Vauxhall single-seater.They finished ahead of Chris Aspinall (Coventry) and Johnathen Varley (Telford). After one of Prescott.s wettest summers, the two days passed with just the slightest hint of drizzle on Sunday afternoon!
