WILLIS WINS AT WET AND DRY PRESCOTT.
Fastest overall at Sunday’s Prescott speed hill climb, Trevor Willis was the only driver to break the 40 second barrier as conditions gradually dried out in the afternoon. It was the second win this year on the Bugatti Owners’ Club hill for the Wendover driver in his unique Yorkshire-built single-seater with Suzuki based V8 engine, and it confirmed his third place in this year’s British Championships.
Crowned as 2008 British Champion at the previous title round in Wiltshire, Scott Moran (Ludlow) had mixed fortunes, starting with an off-course excursion at Orchard Corner in Saturday’s rain-soaked practice, which was halted in the afternoon due to track surface water. “I wasn’t hurt” he explained, “and I decided to treat Sunday morning’s climb as a practice run - and then did not make the first run-off!” But he was fully up to speed in the afternoon, winning the big racing car class and finishing second to Willis in the second shoot-out.
On what could be his last Prescott meeting, outgoing Champion Martin Groves (Bicester) won the first run-off and was third in the afternoon points-scorer. He is confirmed as second in the table. Another former title holder, Graeme Wight Jnr. made the long trip from Aberdeen with his GWR Predator racer and was right on the pace with second and fifth places in the run-offs.
Stroud driver Chris Merrick settled for fifth in the Championship when the Judd V8 engine of his Gould single-seater started giving out tell-tale smoke under acceleration, though he still finished fifth and fourth in the run-offs. “It looks as though an oil seal might be giving trouble, “he explained “which means this is the end of the season for us. The engine is due to get a complete overhaul over the winter anyway, so it is best not to take risks now. Fourth place was a difficult one as Roger Moran is going so well. But it has been a great season and we’ve really enjoyed it”.
Other local drivers on the pace included brothers Ashley and Chris Ward from Edge who finished first and second in the Hill Climb Supersports class; Ian Moss (Stroud) won the Classic saloon car section convincingly, and Charles Boulton (Cheltenham) headed the Classic sports car handicap in his quick MGB. In the Classic racing class Martin Jones (Cheltenham) took a strong third place in his rare Ginetta single-seater.
